Saint Joseph Medical Center, in partnership with the Joliet Fire Department is offering the highly regarded “Stop the Bleed” educational course to the public on July 24, from 10:00AM – 12:00PM in the hospital’s main auditorium. While some may admit to being squeamish at the sight of blood, the reality is that blood loss is the primary cause of death in a trauma or serious injury. Attending the course may enable attendees to save a life. The “Stop the Bleed” program is offered in partnership with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) through its licensing by the U.S. Department of Defense.
“This course has been specifically designed for people with no medical background whatsoever,” says Dr. Kenji Inaba, ACS chair of the “Stop the Bleed” program. He adds, “When you see people learn the basic techniques, you see their confidence build, knowing they can do this. We want everyone to attend this lifesaving course.” Accidents involving blood loss occur when we least expect, often at home, place of work or in a motor vehicle collision or other accident. The importance of knowing the techniques to stop blood loss is as important as knowing CPR.
Leslie Livett, R.N., MS, Saint Joseph’s EMS/Trauma nurse coordinator explains, “We want to educate our communities on how to save a life. There is no blood involved in the session. Attendees will learn hands-on techniques for how to properly apply pressure, pack a wound and apply a tourniquet. You never know when you’ll need these skills, but you’ll be glad you took this course.” The program is free and open to the public. Light snacks will be provided.
